This a neat route, running from Chicago to Seattle (if that's where you're going) or Spokane (if you're switching to the Coast Starlight to get to Los Angeles). Stops on the route include Milwaukee, Fargo, and Glacier National Park.
The Big Sky country of Wyoming and Montana provides views that go for miles and miles. Eventually, the landscape changes to snow-capped Rockies before changing to the Pacific Northwest. Once the train arrives in Spokane, Washington, they separate the train into two smaller trains - with the front half and the diner going to Seattle, and the back half and the lounge/observation car going to Portland. I've had the opportunity to ride the Empire Builder three times, once to Seattle and twice to Portland. The Portland route runs parallel to the Columbia River, and as you can see from the third link below, the scenery along the river is really something to appreciate! |
