Amtrak's Crescent |
The Crescent operates between New York and New Orleans. Despite all that "New", the route is pretty old, and the view from the train is pretty dull if you're south of DC and north of 'Nawlins.
The urban decay between New York City and DC may be unappealing to some, but I find it fascinating to see how much the eastern seaboard has evolved away from its manufacturing base. If you like trees and kudzu, and you've never gotten to see enough trees and kudzu, you may overdose on this route. You may need the countless dilapidated houses, businesses, and backyards to help you through. Wait, did I mention you'll see lots of trees and kudzu? My favorite parts of the this journey are riding over Lake Ponchartrain ($10 says you can convince your seatmate that the train is in the water), and passing by the cemetery minutes before arriving into New Orleans. But I can't stress enough - ride these rails, and you're going to see lots of.. yeah, that. |
